Water: friend and foe – a Dutch-Canadian seminar on Flood Management and Mitigation

A Dutchman visiting Vancouver may need some time to get used to the mountains and steep hills throughout this metropolis. As bike-lovers, we admire Vancouverites rapidly pedalling those hills, leaving our beautiful Gazelles behind. There is one spot though, where our souls and bodies can relax: Richmond. Just south of Vancouver, lies this vast, flat municipality, built on a delta one meter above sea level. Bicycle routes along the Fraser river arms and the ocean side, offer a fantastic view on the coastal mountains. Rich in agriculture and densely populated along the main arteries: in Richmond, Canadian and Dutch qualities come together.
Therefore, the UBC Boathouse along Richmond’s River Road was the ideal place for the Dutch Consulate General and Emergency Management BC to hold a Dutch-Canadian seminar about flood management and mitigation last Friday, May 18, 2012. Read the remainder of this entry »
